Guthrie's Ghost * June 10

Acclaimed independent singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, engineer, and producer Fred Gillen Jr. has traveled around the world for the last 25 years, performing his songs of hope in his never-ending quest to "wage love," carrying the musical mantles of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. "GUTHRIE’S GHOST," comprised of Gillen, David Bernz and his son Jacob, Julie Corbalis, and Steve Kirkman is poised to do just that.

David Bernz has produced Grammy award-winning CDs for Pete Seeger. Of Jacob, world-renowned blues artist Guy Davis says, "You can tell that Jacob Bernz is meant to play this earthy full-out style of acoustic world music." Corbalis has opened for such well-established musical acts as Amy Correia, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, and Sarah Lee Guthrie, to name a few. Steve Kirkman has gone from rural North Carolina to New York by way of Nashville and Memphis, opening for the likes of Richard Thompson, Ritchie Havens, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Jefferson Starship, Procol Harum, and Roger McGuinn.

ELLIS PAUL is an American folk singer-songwriter and a key figure in what has become known as the Boston school of songwriting, a literate, provocative, and urbanely romantic folk-pop style that helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990s and includes national artists such as Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, Susan Werner, Bill Morrissey, and Dar Williams. Paul has released over 19 albums and received 14 Boston Music Awards. He continues playing close to 200 dates annually on the folk circuit. His songs have appeared on more than 50 compilation CDs, alongside artists such as Patty Larkin, Patty Griffin, Greg Brown and Cheryl Wheeler. He has made nearly 40 guest appearances on the albums of artists including Lori McKenna, David Wilcox and Mark Erelli and his pop music songs have appeared in movies and on television.

In a review for the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange, Roberta Schwartz said, "Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. His finely honed songs tell stories filled with images that sparkle like jewels. His is a poet's heart and a romantic's soul. He is an optimist who believes in people and possibilities; few are as smart, as literate and as poetic as Paul. I cannot think of another artist on the acoustic music scene who is better loved by fans, or more respected by his contemporaries."

Lynne Hanson

According to Jan Hall of Folk Roots Radio, “Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, LYNNE HANSON’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn on a dime from a sunshine, blue sky ballad to a full-on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next.” Her hard-living music has garnered her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana.” And while her deep, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart.

Hanson is known for her high-energy, roots guitar-driven live performances, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming. The prolific songwriter has released eight studio albums along with two books of poetry over her 16-year solo career. She’s toured extensively across North America, Europe and the UK, and appeared at leading international festivals including Take Root (Netherlands), Glasgow Americana (Scotland), Maverick Festival (UK), Kerrville Folk Festival (US), and Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada). She has also toured as support for Grammy-nominated artists like Gretchen Peters, Steve Forbert, and Albert Lee.

Lynne Hanson released her ninth album "Ice Cream In November" in April 2022 and it has garnered high praise. Country Music People notes, "The lyrics on this album are some of Hanson's very best, and her vocals are strong and confident ... allied to a superb production ... possibly Lynne Hanson's best work, and Amplify Music Magazine writes, " "A glorious mash-up of Americana, folk, and the occasional indie production and song structure and sounds, made even better by Hanson’s trademark lyrical depth... her best work to date... it’s a strong contender for album of the year.”

HEATHER PIERSON is a pianist, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, song leader, and performer whose inspiring live performances and music delve into Americana, blues, New Orleans jazz, vocal chants, instrumental piano, and folk. Best known for her ease at the piano and her bell-tone vocals, her songs and musicianship embody joy, honesty, playfulness, and a desire to share from the heart. In over 20 years on her record label, Vessel Recordings, she has released 14 albums and several singles of original music.

According to The Folk Project, “She’s one of the sweetest, nicest people you’ve ever met, but on stage, she transforms into a world-class performer, an artist who speaks the language of music in as many dialects as her abilities will allow. Her life’s work is to share her love of music and of life with others – one song, one heart, one mind at a time. Prepare to be transformed and overwhelmed by her and her equally.”

In 2010, following six years of absence from the music world, Heather reclaimed her life and released her first record: Make It Mine, mastered by Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Bob Ludwig. ‘I’m gonna take this life and make it mine,” she wrote and sang, and there’s been no stopping her since. The full-length debut, Singin’, by The Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio, with professional and life partner, Shawn Nadeau on upright bass and Davy Sturtevant on strings and cornet debuted at #1 on the Folk radio charts.

These days, Heather's sound continues to evolve with a variety of musical collaborations such as her current trio, with Nadeau on bass and Craig Bryan on drums, performing her equal-parts-New-Orleans-Oscar-Brubeck piano leanings; a new duo, Peaceful Means, with Leah Boyd featuring original and choice cover songs nurturing nonviolent consciousness, and a group called The Potboilers, an immersive, collaborative, spontaneous, multi-genre musical experience whose motto is: 'Groove plus melody equals joy.”

CRICKET BLUE’s dense, often dark narratives are delivered with catchy musical and lyrical hooks. The duo of Laura Heaberlin and Taylor Smith are storytellers as much as musicians. Listeners have lauded their songs as “an astonishing mix of original lyrics and arrangements that rewards the casual listener, as well as those who choose to lean forward and roll them around like great pieces of literature and composition” and praised their work as an "unlikely combination of the gothic, the literary, and the hummable."

The pair met at Middlebury College in an a cappella group when both were also performing locally as solo singer-songwriters. Later, as professionals involved in the folk scene in Burlington, Vermont, they collaborated on more and more duets to add variety to their single sets. Eventually, Heaberlin and Smith evolved into a duo, and in the summer of 2013 formed Cricket Blue. Paste magazine has dubbed Cricket Blue one of the "10 Vermont Bands You Should Listen To Now." Vermont's alternative weekly Seven Days called them "indie folk with soul and intellect," naming their last EP one of the year's best albums. B-Side raved, "You're lulled in by the sweetness of their melodies that are reminiscent of traditional Appalachian folk or literary indie rock…and find yourself suddenly surprised by the epiphanies that their songs so often crescendo to." Cricket Blue has played stages and folk festivals in both the United States and Canada.
