Monica Rizzio’s debut album (as a solo artist), Washashore Cowgirl, was nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 15th Annual Independent Music Awards, held at the Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts in 2016. Monica co-produced Washashore Cowgirl along with Jon Evans (bassist for Tori Amos & Sarah McLachlan) who also plays throughout the album. Together they sculpted her songs to become what she likes to call “AmeriCountryGrass.”
Roots Music Report gave Washashore Cowgirl a 5 Star review, saying “Throughout the album Monica’s song writing and vocals show off her unique style and just get better with each play.” While online publication Country Grrl wrote “Rizzio manages to elegantly blend tradition and modernity, humor and depth, north and south inspirations.” Washashore Cowgirl has received confirmed airplay on approximately 200 stations in over 40 states nationwide. It charted among the top ten albums on both The Roots Music Report’s WeeklyTop 50 Folk Airplay Chart, and the monthly Folk DJ Chart.
Monica Rizzio previously became known to many of her current fans for the five plus years she spent in Tripping Lilies, an award winning bluegrass band she helped found and front. Her solos career since she left Iripping Lily in late 2012, has brought her closer to her childhood musical roots in Texas, where she originally was from. Since becoming a solo artist Rizzion has won many new admirers, such as these:
“She has reinvented the landscape with her unique voice and technicolor sound, redefining what has gone before.” Patty Larkin
“I made the tactical error of inviting Monica Rizzio to share the stage with me at Symphony Hall and she went and stole the audience right out from under me!” Tom Rush
